Which Stoves and Fuel Canisters Fit the MTP Backcountry Table

Disclosure: We make the MTP Backcountry Table, and everything below comes from our own testing. We've been upfront about what we tested and what we didn't.

The question we hear most: "Will my stove and fuel canister work with this table?" Short answer: yes, with standard canisters. Here's exactly what we tested, with photos.

The short version

  • Canisters tested: MSR 100 g and 450 g, Jetboil 100 g and 230 g, and Olicamp 230 g. All five fit.
  • Works with any standard canister: standard screw-on canisters share one threaded connector, the part your stove attaches to, so brand and size don't get in the way.
  • Stoves tested: the MSR Switch stove system, the TOAKS Titanium Backpacking Stove, and the MSR PocketRocket Deluxe. Each one screwed onto the canisters and sat very stable on the table.
  • Sits on top of the table: liquid-fuel stoves like the MSR WhisperLite and most Jetboil stoves.

How it works: the canister seats in the stove slot, the stove screws on

The canister twists and sets into place in the stove slot. Once it's seated, screw the stove onto the canister. The stove sits above the table, and the canister hangs below.

That setup works with so many canisters because they all use the same size threaded connector on top, the same one your stove screws onto. Brand and size don't change it.

All three stoves held steady on the table.

Stoves we tested

In October 2026, we tested three stoves. Each one screwed onto the canisters, worked well, and stayed stable.

  • MSR Switch stove system
  • TOAKS Titanium Backpacking Stove
  • MSR PocketRocket Deluxe

Canisters we tested

"Fits" means the canister twists and sets into place in the stove slot, and a stove then screws onto it. All five fit and worked well.

  • MSR 100 g (3.5 oz)
  • Jetboil 100 g (3.5 oz)
  • Jetboil 230 g (8 oz)
  • Olicamp 230 g (8 oz)
  • MSR 450 g (16 oz)

Sizes are nominal: 100 g is about 3.5 oz, 230 g is about 8 oz, and 450 g is about 16 oz. Tested October 2026.

Stoves that sit on top of the table

Not every stove uses the stove slot. Liquid-fuel stoves like the MSR WhisperLite run off a separate fuel bottle, so the stove rests on top of the table instead. The table is sized with these stoves in mind, which is one reason it is the size it is.

Zach, one of our co-founders, uses an MSR WhisperLite International as his main stove and sets it up on the table every time he heads out. The fuel bottle sits at the far right of the table. That's everyday use, not a formal test like the canister results above.

Jetboil stoves are a different story. We haven't tested Jetboil stove models, so we can't say exactly which ones fit the stove slot. Judging by how most are built, they sit on top of the table instead. Jetboil canisters themselves do fit.

What we didn't test

  • Jetboil stove models. We tested Jetboil canisters in the stove slot, but not Jetboil stoves, so we can't say which models fit.
  • Other canister brands. Standard canisters from other brands share the same threaded connector, so they work the same way. This guide covers MSR, Jetboil, and Olicamp.
  • Other stoves, including alcohol stoves and any liquid-fuel stove not named above.

If you're running something we haven't listed, check it against the lists above and let us know how it works out at support@mtprovisionsoutdoors.com.

Common questions

Do Jetboil canisters fit?

Yes. Jetboil 100 g and 230 g canisters both fit the stove slot. Jetboil stoves are a separate question: we haven't tested those models, so we can't say which ones fit, but most sit on top of the table.

Can I use a 450 g (16 oz) canister?

Yes. The MSR 450 g canister fits. Since standard canisters share the same threaded connector, other brands work the same way.

Which stoves work with the table?

Any standard backpacking stove. The table is designed to work with all of them, whether a stove seats in the stove slot or rests on the surface. The MSR Switch stove system, the TOAKS Titanium Backpacking Stove, and the MSR PocketRocket Deluxe all threaded onto the canisters we tested and stayed stable. Stoves that don't use the slot, like the MSR WhisperLite and most Jetboil models, simply sit on top of the table.

Can I use a liquid-fuel stove like the MSR WhisperLite?

Yes. The table is sized so stoves like the WhisperLite can sit on top of it. Zach, one of our co-founders, cooks on his WhisperLite International on the table every trip.

Can I use an alcohol stove?

We haven't tested alcohol stoves.
